Why is the Duramax LML EGR cooler failure so common?
The LML Duramax EGR cooler failure is the most notorious reliability issue affecting 2011-2016 trucks, particularly 2011-2013 model years. The EGR cooler uses thin-wall tubing that cracks under thermal cycling, allowing coolant to mix with exhaust gases and contaminate the intake system. When failure occurs: coolant sprays into the intake manifold, white smoke pours from the exhaust, the engine runs rough or wonโt start, and repair costs $1,400-$2,200 including labor. The 2011-2013 trucks had the worst EGR cooler design - GM issued a Technical Service Bulletin but never recalled. Many LML owners delete primarily to prevent this failure rather than for performance gains. Do I need to upgrade my Allison transmission after deleting my Duramax?
Allison transmission upgrades are NOT required for most power levels. The Allison transmissions GM uses are exceptionally robust. LML Allison 1000 (2011-2016): Handles 500-550 HP reliably with stock internals, torque converter upgrade recommended at 475+ HP for better lockup, full transmission build only needed beyond 600 HP. L5P Allison 10-speed (2017-2019) or updated Allison 1000 (2020-2023): Handles 600+ HP stock without issues, among the strongest transmissions available, rarely requires upgrades even with aggressive tuning. Most Duramax owners run 450-550 HP daily for years with zero transmission issues - the Allison is that good.
